Santa María Cathedral presents the application of new church restoration techniques in Italy

The Cathedral was invited to participate in a congress on 3D and architecture in Trento The system to recover the portico’s polychromes was presented

Vitoria-Gasteiz, February 27, 2009 – In Italy last week, Fundación Catedral Santa María presented the new technologies being applied to conserve and recover the church in Vitoria. Within the framework of the 2009 3D Arch congress, an event that includes the participation of experts from countries such as France, the US, Italy, Switzerland and Japan, techniques were presented for the Cathedral’s virtual reconstruction and the portico polychromes’ recovery via a light project system.
Representatives of Fundación Catedral Santa María were guest speakers at the 2009 3D Arch Congress, an event that brought international experts together in Trento between February 25 and 28 to learn more about the cutting-edge three-dimensional techniques being applied during the restoration of the architectural heritage.
The presentation, entitled Space through time. Application of virtual 3D reconstruction techniques and light projection in the analysis and reconstruction of cultural heritage, introduced the way in which work is being conducted on this emblematic project in the capital of Alava.
The Fundación has been working on a restoration process since it was founded in 1999 that features the application of new technologies to preserve heritage with compatibility criteria. A 3D photogrammetric model that enables drawings and photographs to be obtained was made at the start and has been the basis for developing and later managing all of the multidisciplinary studies. Furthermore, once digitalised, all the information has been connected to a cartographic model, creating a Geographical Information System called GIS that provides all the keys to the monument.
This congress also introduced the Cathedral’s most recent initiative, which will soon be presented to the public: a light projection system that will enable the reconstruction of the polychromes applied throughout the portico’s history. This system, which is the result of complex research in which experts from different disciplines have taken part, is a complete revolution that will allow the portico’s centuries-old chromatic and artistic wealth to be recovered.
