David Soler and Quinteto Denga to fill Santa María Cathedral with jazz, rock and contemporary classical music

The concert will take place on 8:00 p.m. and is free of charge, although tickets must be collected in advance.

Vitoria-Gasteiz, May 20, 2009 – This Saturday at 8:00 p.m., Santa María Cathedral will be offering a performance by David Soler and Quinteto Denga, a blend of jazz, rock and contemporary classical music that will fill the Cathedral portico as part of the “Open for Concert” series. Tickets must be collected in advance.
After musician and Vitoria native Daniel Oyarzabal’s performance last May 9, the month will be concluding with a new musical proposal.  On this occasion, the Cathedral portico will be hosting guitarist David Soler, who is now leading his first band after being a member of jazz groups such as the Llibert Fortuny electric quintet and the Jonah Smith Band.
As ‘Denga’, Soler crosses jazz with rock, contemporary music with African tones and spectral electronic sounds with primitive marimbas. Denga is a fusion, the synthesis of the most disparate languages. Its repertoire includes off-shoots of jazz rock, musical landscapes that seem plucked from the soundtrack of the film Paris, Texas and pieces by composers Messiaen and Hindemith. This material is as heterodoxical as Soler’s career, since his curriculum vitae includes lessons with the guitarist from Steely Dan and a tour with Catalan Tortell Poltrona before his 18th birthday.
With Soler in the lead, the group is made up of Eric Deutza on keyboards, Ben Rubbin on the electric bass, percussionist Marc Pino and drummer Borja Barrueta.
As part of Fundación Catedral Santa María’s “Open for Concert” series, this recital is also a part of the Jazzargia project. Founded in late 2007, Jazzargia is a cultural and musical association of jazz lovers who wish to recover the culture of live musical in our most proximate surroundings.  In addition to organising live events, it puts out an informative publication and sponsors educational initiatives to introduce the public to this type of music.
Once more, the concert will be free of charge and held in the Cathedral portico at 8:00 p.m.. Since seating is limited, tickets must be collected in advance from the Visitors Reception Centre (Plaza de las Brullerías).
