The Foundation is holding a school mural competition on the future design of Plaza de Santa María

02/09/2009 The eight winning projects will be displayed on the walls currently surrounding this public space

Vitoria-Gasteiz, September 2, 2009 - Fundación Catedral Santa María is organising a mural competition for all of Alava’s primary and secondary school students under the slogan “What do you want this square to be like?”. The goal is to spur reflection on how they want the walls ringing this emblematic plaza - which reaches the foot of the tower and is currently occupied by restoration works – to be like in the future. Fundación Catedral Santa María is proposing this initiative to exercise the imagination of Alava’s youngest residents, those who will most enjoy this thrilling project, while endeavouring to enhance the active involvement and participation of the schools themselves, teachers and parents in the emotional and symbolic recovery of our cathedral and its surroundings.

Participants have until October 18 to send one group project per class. A jury composed of five prominent personages will select the eight best projects from among all the sketches submitted. The prize-winning projects will be turned into 4-metre-long by 2-metre-high murals accompanied by brief explanatory texts in Basque, Spanish, English and French. The designs will remain on the walls around Plaza de Santa María for a year and the competition will be held again on a yearly basis.  All schools submitting projects will be mentioned as participants.

Fundación Catedral Santa María’s main offices are temporarily located in the Visitors Welcome Centre (Plaza de las Brullerías s/n), and projects can be turned in Mondays to Fridays from 10.30 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. and 4.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m..
